Due to the continuous progress of science and technology, many mechanical equipments are widely used in daily life. At present, many industries or fields in mechanical production need to use different types of machines, including hydraulic presses and mechanical presses. Generally speaking, the mechanical press is characterized by high production speed, while the hydraulic press provides higher flexibility for more complex molding processes. Although the same purpose can be achieved, the working principles of these two machines are quite different. Although both are used for pressing products, the working principles of the two machines are quite different.

    Mechanical press vs hydraulic press

    Working principle of mechanical press

The mechanical press generates power mechanically, which means that the motor is connected to the crankshaft in various ways, and the crankshaft makes the stamping parts cycle and finish a complete work. The motor generating the impulse is connected to the flywheel through the conveyor belt. On a simple press, the motor is connected to the crankshaft and controlled by the attached clutch. This machine works stably and has high accuracy. At the same time, it has good operating conditions, high productivity, and is easy to realize mechanization and automation. It is suitable for working on automatic lines and widely used in automobile, shipbuilding and other industries.

    Working principle of hydraulic press

The basic principle of the hydraulic press is that the oil pump delivers the hydraulic oil to the integrated cartridge valve block, and distributes the hydraulic oil to the upper or lower cavity of the oil cylinder through each check valve and overflow valve. Under the action of high-pressure oil, the oil cylinder moves. Hydraulic press is a device that uses liquid to transmit pressure. When liquid transfers pressure in a closed container, it follows Pascal’s law. This principle is a law of hydrostatics. It points out that after any point in the incompressible static fluid is subjected to an external force to produce a pressure increment, the pressure increment will be transmitted to all points of the static fluid in a short time. The hydraulic press was invented according to this principle. Hydraulic presses are often used for pressing and forming processes, such as stamping, bending, flanging, powder forming, pressing and so on.

How to select the right machine correctly? The followings are the advantages and disadvantages of two kinds of stamping equipment:

    Advantages of mechanical press

    1. It has a higher level of control and operation speed, fast operation and high efficiency.

    2. The setting is relatively simple and easy to operate, which is conducive to reducing operating costs.

    3. There is no need to use hydraulic oil to prevent leakage, which is conducive to environmental protection.

    4. The transmission center and the overall center of the machine tend to be consistent to ensure the stability of stamping accuracy. The machine adopts two slider balancers to ensure that it keeps balanced operation.

    5. The brake device is sensitive, coupled with dual electromagnetic device and overload protection device, to ensure the accuracy of the operation and stop of the press slider.

    Mechanical press

    Disadvantages of mechanical press

    1. The fixed stroke length makes the mechanical press unsuitable for applications requiring variable stroke length, such as free forging.

    2. In order to increase its transmission power, mechanical presses are generally equipped with heavy flywheels. The machine is large in volume, noisy and vibrating during operation.

    3. The replacement cost of crankshaft, flywheel, brake system and other components is very high and usually needs to be customized.

    Advantages of hydraulic press

    1. The hydraulic press can generate full pressure at any place of the stroke. This allows the operator to control the height of various operating parameters such as pressure, travel, etc.

    2. The pressure can be regulated and limited by adjusting the pressure control valve to prevent overload, which is conducive to protecting the mold and equipment.

    3. The components of hydraulic press are more standardized, serialized and universal. The price is relatively low, easy to repair and replace.

    4. Because of its simple structure, the actuating element of the hydraulic system of the hydraulic press has strong adaptability. It is easy to achieve large working pressure, long working stroke and large working space, and is suitable for pressing large pieces, long or high workpieces. In addition, its layout is flexible, and it can be arranged in multiple directions and distributed in multiple places according to the needs of the process.

    5. The hydraulic press can produce the rated maximum pressure at any position. It can also maintain pressure at the point of conversion for a long time, which is necessary for many processes.

    6. The speed of the moving beam can be adjusted in a corresponding range and to a considerable extent to meet the different requirements of the process on the speed of the slider.

    7. Through the combination of different valves, different programs in the process can be realized to adapt to program changes in time, so as to realize program control and computer automatic control.

    Disadvantages of hydraulic press

    1. Liquid leakage may occur during production, thus polluting the environment.

    2. Unlike mechanical press, hydraulic press is not a high-speed machine. The piston movement and fluid mechanism are not designed for rapid production.

    3. The manufacturing accuracy of hydraulic components is required to be high. Due to the high technical requirements of components, the use and maintenance are relatively strict.

Although the functions of the two machines are similar, the hydraulic press is more widely used. The hydraulic press can realize the stamping of various processes, and it is more economical. In particular, it is applied to the parts processing of the automobile industry. On the other hand, mechanical press can meet the demand of high speed and high output. In general, both machines have their own advantages. Therefore, flexibility, speed, output, cost and other factors should be considered before purchasing the press to meet the processing requirements.
